Abbreviations

When listing abbreviations after your name, follow the order of degree, license, then credential. For example:

  • John Doe, PhD, LAT, ATC

  • Jane Doe, MS, LAT, ATC, CSCS

AT vs ATC

AT is used as a noun and references the athletic trainer as a person. However, ATC is used to recognize the athletic trainer's credentials and should only be used after their name to show their certification.

ALWAYS use Athletic Trainer or BOC Certified Athletic Trainer in writing/while speaking. Never use just "trainer" as this does not distinguish you from other professionals.

Use Athletic Training Facility, not Athletic Training Room.

The Board of Certification (BOC) is a credentialing organization for continuing education units and certifying/maintaining certification of athletic trainers.

The National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) is a large professional membership for athletic trainers.
